Jennifer Harris Artist Statement

Like smiling at people with kindness; art can transform a day for a nanosecond.  In the hope of this transformation, I paint stories and fleeting snapshots from life experience in ways that ring true to me.  The results may be abstract or representational. I delight in spare compositions and minimal colours to mix each work from.

Nigh-night Ninderry reveals my minds eye view to Ninderry late at night.  This landmark is part of the fabric of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.

Iridescent paint layers twine around acrylic granules; gleaming glass-like on ridge peaks.

Nigh-night Ninderry is one of three paintings in the series.  It lodged in The Buttery gallery as part of the Arts Connect ‘Untethered’ exhibition at The Butter Factory, Cooroy, QLD, Australia from Feb 23 to Apr 03 2018.

Have you been outside on a bright moonlit night somewhere without street lighting?  Even in a city park you might see the trees and gates gilded with silver…

Here is my painted translation of this sensation in Night Ledge to Ninderry. Looking towards the coast beyond Ninderry, across zig-zagging ridges.

I’ve simplified the forms to reflect the transformative moonlight experience. You might now feel you could peel back each layer of mystery and reveal the history.

Night Ledge to Ninderry is the second of three paintings in the series.  It kept the other two company in The Buttery gallery as part of the Arts Connect ‘Untethered’ exhibition at The Butter Factory, Cooroy, QLD, Australia from Feb 23 to Apr 03 2018.

Today you can climb Ninderry for exercise and views of the Sunshine Coast.  Yet, according to legend Ninderry had a brutal beginning.  A link to one version of the story is here: Sunshine Coast Council Indigenous Heritage

Ledge to Ninderry is an interpretive painting of my view from Montville during the day.  You are looking across to the silhouette of Ninderry blotting the ocean beyond.

Ledge to Ninderry is the first of three paintings in the series.  It enjoyed a vacation in The Buttery gallery as part of the Arts Connect ‘Untethered’ exhibition at The Butter Factory, Cooroy, QLD, Australia from Feb 23 to Apr 03 2018.
