Mighty Mango painting
2014 Acrylic on Canvas 20 x 20cm
One of six (Seed Series II – Summer Fruit) for Minutiae Exhibition at Rosebed Gallery, Eudlo
Same Montville pottery bowl, but I played with the colours for this second series of paintings.
Mango season is a classic for people who live in Queensland, Australia. It is summer, it is too hot, but there are mangoes! This one is from the orchard here. Sliced to show a glimpse of the huge awkward seed and the other ‘cheek’ ready to eat…
Papaya Fire painting
2014 Acrylic on Canvas 20 x 20cm
One of six (Seed Series II – Summer Fruit) for Minutiae Exhibition, Rosebed Gallery, Eudlo
Papayas also grow here – the seeds look how I imagine caviar would. I sliced the Papaya lengthwise and placed across the Montville Pottey bowl – like sticks in the fiery heat of Summer.
Watermelon Wedges painting
2014 Acrylic on Canvas 20 x 20cm
One of six (Seed Series II – Summer Fruit) for Minutiae Exhibition, Rosebed Gallery, Eudlo
I placed the watermelon wedges in the old Montville Pottery bowl ready to eat. So sweet and juicy in the heat of our Summer. I cut wedges so you can imagine picking up each one …
Pomegranate Planet painting
2014 Acrylic on Canvas 20 x 20cm
One of six (Seed Series II – Summer Fruit) for Minutiae Exhibition at Rosebed Gallery, Eudlo
Translucent fleshy jewels wrapped in paper-thin packages burst from the hard, polished angular fruit. Painting Pomegranate Planet was quite an experience. The name came from its hulking profile taking up the Montville Pottery bowl. Look for a tender surprise in the shadow shape though …
Pretty Pineapple painting
2014 Acrylic on Canvas 20 x 20cm
One of six (Seed Series II – Summer Fruit) for Minutiae Exhibition at Rosebed Gallery, Eudlo
Fresh pineapple is grown in this area and tastes so different from the tins of yellow circles I grew up with.
Pretty Pineapple was a challenge to paint in that I wanted to show a side of this fruit other than the classic profile. I removed the raggedy top and sliced it lengthwise to reveal patterns in the columns of pale juiciness.
Apricot Kisses painting
2014 Acrylic on Canvas 20 x 20cm
One of six (Seed Series II – Summer Fruit) for Minutiae Exhibition at Rosebed Gallery, Eudlo
Apricots seem a gentle fruit to me and the way these sections sat in the Montville pottery bowl just touching each other gave me the name for this painting.
I used a slower drying formulation of paint to blend and blur their fuzzy skin and soft flesh.
